Happy Clients. Happy Partnerships.

We love the house the Hennen Building Company built for us but, more importantly, the way Gene helped us through the process. Gene helped us find solutions we were happy with each step of the way when faced with changes from the bank, the architect, and the building inspector. He helped us to have the house we wanted.
We were also delighted with how well Gene kept everything on schedule. Construction on the Big Island often involves delays, but Gene managed to have each crew ready when needed. The organization of the entire project was very impressive.

We engaged the Hennen Building Company to repair wood rot on our overly large picture windows that, once he had assessed the extent of the damage, needed to have the wood sills and frames replaced. Gene and his crew performed the work flawlessly, never removing/breaking the glass and installing the exact match wood to the remaining trim. The work was done promptly and efficiently.

Gene is one of the most reliable, trustworthy and creative General Contractors I've worked with. He is a highly skilled contractor employing a fine team of carpenters and subs, enabling him to meet the challenges of out-of-the-box construction. He goes the extra mile to communicate effectively with me as well as with my clients, freely offering clever solutions to difficult construction challenges. He keeps my office informed as to the progress of the job and doesn't hesitate to call if he has any questions about the plans - which he reads and understands thoroughly.

We built a home with the Hennen Building Company and I have to say it was a pleasurable experience with a minimum of “drama”. First of all, Gene is easy to work with. He is friendly and down to earth, and also clear and concise. From planning to implementation, He was extremely accessible and always responsive to our ideas and requests. Gene’s crew was professional, polite and on time. If there were hold- ups or things like rain, Gene and his crew would figure out ways to continue working on the project, instead of taking “down” days that would delay the building. For example: A shipment was short of the correct color of roofing we needed and Gene and his crew brought in temporary roofing so that they could continue the project and stay on schedule until the correct color of roofing was available. The house turned out beautiful, but more amazingly, on time and on budget. Thank you Gene, for a great experience. I highly recommend the Hennen Building Company if you are considering any kind of building project.

Working with the Hennen Building Company is like working with a friend who will walk you through every step of the way. Gene will take the time to review timelines on the construction flow and will recommend changes that will save money. Gene has the most courteous construction team we have ever met. Whenever we would visit the construction site, his team would stop their work and take the time to walk us through what was done and answer any questions we had. They are not only friendly, they are hard-working and very neat. The quality of their work was very evident in their work nature. Each had a separate sense of pride in their work. Gene's foreman is a perfectionist and his work gives you a feeling that your home is well built. There is no other construction company like the Hennen Building Company.

Every day I get to re-experience my extremely positive outcome with Gene Hennen’s quality work. Every day I feel the solid strength of the house he built for me on Reed’s Island in Hilo. Every day I re-appreciate the craftsmanship and care that went into this amazing house. And every once in a while—usually when I'm talking to someone who is going through grief with a different contractor- I get to experience what did NOT happen: delays, cost overruns, arguments, mistakes, and hassles of every variety.
I am extremely glad that I chose Gene Hennen and his marvelous crew as the builders of my house. The difference between a good house and a poor one? Four years is my guess—because in that time the flaws and shortcuts in construction will emerge. The difference between a good house and a great one? In this there are many factors that may not show on a punch list. But certainly a relationship of trust and mutual respect is necessary to carry one's dream to completion. Gene and I met many times in the run up to building my house. He was available, unrushed, present, and gently forceful in laying out his vision for construction. It was in those pre-building meetings that we got to know each other and to begin the communication that would carry us through excavation, materials choice, scheduling, delivery, and the less obvious aspects of bringing a huge project into reality. Not one second of that time was wasted. In Year Three, after a week of torrential rain, a small leak showed up in the upstairs powder room ceiling. Gene had Jeff Fishman over here within two days of hearing about it and Jeff fixed the leak with his friendly professionalism; I've had no more trouble from that, and no other problem.
I wholeheartedly recommend Gene Hennen to you. My experience of Gene and his work has been enormously positive—so much so that we continued our contact and we are still friends. There are very few contractors that can claim that!
